What If You Really Could Kill Commercials? |

quote this guy;
Milo_Mindbender asks:
"I'm sure many of the readers of this site know the joy of skipping commercials using a TiVO, Replay or other form of PVR box. I'm sure it has occurred to a lot of us that if someone produced a schedule of commercial stop/start times the PVR could easily make all commercials instantly vanish from a recording. While this would be really cool, if it got really popular it would KILL all the local TV stations and TV networks who depend on ads to survive. Sure, you could say it's their fault for having an outdated business model, but there's a problem: these sources are where A LOT of the content for your PVR comes from. If they die, there's nothing for your PVR to record. My question for this crowd is: 'If the commercials stopped tomorrow, what business models can you come up with that would keep TV content flowing to your PVR?'"
If they can't make money, they stop. What do you propose?

Advertisements will be integrated more tightly into shows (throuh product placements, characters using products, pop-up ads, etc). It will become impossible to separate "ad" from "show" without blanking out most of the screen.
(consider how difficult it is to remove all the ads from a televised baseball game, where they are plastered all over the field... before long sitcoms will start looking like this =) |

Re: What If You Really Could Kill Commercials? (Score: 1) by Beldurin on Monday, August 26 @ 12:10:24 BST (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.packethell.com | First of all, PVR is still not mainstream enough to be a threat. However, when RBB (residential broadband) hits it big (with HDTV, VoD, nVoD, etc) there's going to be all kinds of new opportunities for that kind of stuff.
First of all, subscription fees for content coming in on RBB systems will help, not only the carrier, but the content production companies (i.e. tv stations and networks). Local stations must be given access to these media BY LAW (see t-com act of 1996/98).
Capt'n EO has a point w/product placement. With MPEG-7 and 14, more kinds of controls can be integrated into the video stream, such as being able to select and "click" on items w/in the program to get more info. You like the couch? Click on it and it takes you to the company's catalog. Direct marketing has another opportunity...things like CNN "tickers" are a possibility as well. In an "information pull" environment, people can also access previously stored advertisements. Say I'm in the market for a refrigerator, I can then access the refrigerator commercials.
The sheer bandwidth available per channel with the HDTV allocations is staggering. If I remember correctly, they have approximately 19Mhz per channel to play with, and it only takes ~6Mhz to transmit a NTSC signal. HDTV is supposed to take up the 19Mhz (and currently does, but won't for long with new compression techniques). Therefore they can fit other things into that spectrum...advertising, Internet access, direct marketing, etc similar to how they send closed captioning and SAP information in the old vertical blanking bands.
It's doable...it'll cause some major chaos as everyone struggles to figure out the technology (but the same happened w/the BnW to Color transition), and what the business drivers will be. But it is doable.

eg. john smiths advert, commonwealth diving competition. new zealand and australia do really stunning dives. then john smith from england jumps off the top board and does a bomb in to the pool... pure class
simple solution, MAKE US WANT TO WATCH THE ***** THINGS BY MAKING THEM FUUNY I.E ENTERTAINING!!! |
