Giuliani Confronted At New York Fundraiser
Posted by incubus on Wednesday, November 07 @ 09:06:40 UTC (83737 reads)
Politics BlackFlag writes:

NEW YORK -- A radical group at a Bronx fundraiser confronted Rudolph Giuliani on Tuesday morning, accusing him of being one of the "criminals of 9/11."

The Republican candidate for president was outside City Island's Sea Shore restaurant in the Bronx, speaking with WNBC.com's Adam Shapiro about his fundraising in New York.

Afterward, a young woman claiming to be the relative of a Sept. 11, 2001, firefighter who died when the towers collapsed, asked Giuliani why he allegedly told Peter Jennings the towers would fall that day, but did not stop the rescue efforts of firefighters and police officers.

Bush Administation Breaks Record! - The Budget
Posted by jon on Wednesday, November 23 @ 14:39:43 UTC (111551 reads)
Politics JR2000Z writes:
Borrows More from Foreign Nations than
Previous 42 Presidents Combined

WASHINGTON, DC -- President George W. Bush and the current administration have now borrowed more money from foreign governments and banks than the previous 42 U.S. presidents combined, which the Blue Dog Coalition in the House of Representatives called “astounding.

Throughout the first 224 years (1776-2000) of our nation’s history, 42 U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions according to the U.S. Treasury Department. In the past four years alone (2001-2005), the Bush Administration has borrowed a staggering $1.05 trillion.

"The seriousness of this rapid and increasing financial vulnerability of our country can hardly be overstated, said Rep. John Tanner (TN), a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition and member of the House Ways and Means Committee. “The financial mismanagement of our country by the Bush Administration should be of concern to all Americans, regardless of political persuasion.

The Blue Dogs have long expressed tremendous concern over mounting U.S. debt and are particularly troubled by our growing dependence on foreign governments to finance our debt. Earlier this year, the Coalition offered a 12 Step Plan to cure our nation’s addiction to deficit spending. The Blue Dog plan required, among other things, that all federal agencies pass clean audits, a balanced budget, and the establishment of a rainy day fund to be used in the event of a natural disaster.

“No American political leadership has ever willfully and deliberately mortgaged our country to foreign interests in the manner we have witnessed over the past four years, continued Rep. Tanner. “If this recklessness is not stopped, I truly believe our economic freedom as American citizens is in great jeopardy."

The Blue Dog Coalition is a group of 36 conservative to moderate House Democrats focused on fiscal responsibility.

yeah, and the republicans are dirty...

Politics Wolfguard writes:
A memo circulated among Democrats on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence shows the committee's minority plotting to use classified information against the White House in next year's presidential campaign.

"We have carefully reviewed our options under the rules and believe we have identified the best approach. Our plan is as follows:

"1) Pull the majority along as far as we can on issues that may lead to major new disclosures regarding improper or questionable conduct by administration officials. We are having some success in that regard.

"For example, in addition to the President's State of the Union speech, the chairman [Sen. Pat Roberts] has agreed to look at the activities of the office of the Secretary of Defense, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, as well as Secretary Bolton's office at the State Department.

"The fact that the chairman supports our investigations into these offices and cosigns our requests for information is helpful and potentially crucial. We don't know what we will find but our prospects for getting the access we seek is far greater when we have the backing of the majority. [We can verbally mention some of the intriguing leads we are pursuing.]

"2) Assiduously prepare Democratic 'additional views' to attach to any interim or final reports the committee may release. Committee rules provide this opportunity and we intend to take full advantage of it.

"In that regard we may have already compiled all the public statements on Iraq made by senior administration officials. We will identify the most exaggerated claims. We will contrast them with the intelligence estimates that have since been declassified. Our additional views will also, among other things, castigate the majority for seeking to limit the scope of the inquiry.

"The Democrats will then be in a strong position to reopen the question of establishing an Independent Commission [i.e., the Corzine Amendment.]

"3) Prepare to launch an independent investigation when it becomes clear we have exhausted the opportunity to usefully collaborate with the majority. We can pull the trigger on an independent investigation of the administration's use of intelligence at any time. But we can only do so once.

"The best time to do so will probably be next year, either:

"A) After we have already released our additional views on an interim report, thereby providing as many as three opportunities to make our case to the public. Additional views on the interim report (1). The announcement of our independent investigation (2). And (3) additional views on the final investigation. Or:

"B) Once we identify solid leads the majority does not want to pursue, we would attract more coverage and have greater credibility in that context than one in which we simply launch an independent investigation based on principled but vague notions regarding the use of intelligence.

"In the meantime, even without a specifically authorized independent investigation, we continue to act independently when we encounter footdragging on the part of the majority. For example, the FBI Niger investigation was done solely at the request of the vice chairman. We have independently submitted written requests to the DOD and we are preparing further independent requests for information.

"SUMMARY: Intelligence issues are clearly secondary to the public's concern regarding the insurgency in Iraq. Yet we have an important role to play in revealing the misleading, if not flagrantly dishonest, methods and motives of senior administration officials who made the case for unilateral preemptive war.

"The approach outlined above seems to offer the best prospect for exposing the administration's dubious motives." [End of Memo Excerpt.]

Bush's Next War - A New Ally
Posted by adminn on Sunday, June 01 @ 13:38:10 UTC (8767 reads)
Politics ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- U.S. President George W. Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions and expressed concern over Iran's nuclear program.

"We strongly urge North Korea to visibly, verifiably and irreversibly dismantle its nuclear program," Bush told a joint news conference after the two leaders met privately for 45 minutes inside Konstantin Palace.

"We are concerned about Iran's advanced nuclear program and urge Iran to comply in full with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty."

Bush said both the United States and Russia were "determined to meet the threats of weapons of mass destruction."

It was the first meeting between the two leaders since the U.S.-led Iraq war, which Russia opposed.

Both leaders, seated at twin white desks for the palace news conference, said they were putting the dispute behind them.

The "fundamentals of the relations between the United States and Russia turned out to be stronger than the forces and events that tested it," Putin said, as Bush nodded in agreement.

Added Bush: "We are working closely to confront the challenges of our time. ... Both of our countries have suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists, and our governments are taking action to confront this threat."

When asked about the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Bush said: "We've discovered weapons systems, biological labs, that Iraq denied she had, and labs that were prohibited under the U.N. resolutions."

Earlier this weekend, Bush pointed to two mobile laboratories found in Iraq which U.S. intelligence concluded were probably designed to produce biological weapons, The Associated Press reported. However, both the Pentagon and U.S. weapons hunters have said the labs do not constitute arms.

Putin did not offer any opinion on whether weapons of mass destruction would be found in Iraq.

But British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in an interview with Sky News, said he had "no doubt whatever that the evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction will be there. Absolutely."

Blair said he had already seen plenty of information that his critics had not, but would in due course.

"Over the coming weeks and months we will assemble this evidence and then we will give it to people," he said. "I have no doubt whatever that the evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction will be there."

48 Hours Until War.

Politics WASHINGTON, March 17 — In one of the gravest hours of his presidency, President Bush told Saddam Hussein and his sons tonight that they had 48 hours to surrender power and to leave Iraq, or face a sure, swift and ruinous war. If the Iraqi dictator refuses to go into exile with his sons within that time, the result will be a military campaign "commenced at a time of our choosing," Mr. Bush vowed in a somber address from the White House.

N. Korea test fires missile
Posted by adminn on Monday, February 24 @ 21:05:36 UTC (13545 reads)
Politics

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea has fired a missile into the Sea of Japan, escalating a tense standoff on the peninsula as world leaders gather in Seoul for the inauguration of South Korea's new president.

In a provocative move ahead of Roh Moo-hyun's inauguration, Pyongyang fired a missile into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, South Korea's Ministry of Defense said, rattling markets around the region.

The land-to-ship missile was fired on Monday, as U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and other dignitaries arrived in Seoul for Tuesday's swearing-in ceremony of the untested 56-year-old leader.

Tensions between Washington and North Korea have heated up in recent months after the United States said Pyongyang admitted in October it was working on a secret nuclear program -- something the North has denied.

North Korea has responded by kicking out international inspectors and intensifying its rhetoric against Washington.

The missile was fired from the northeastern coast of North Korea and traveled about 60 kilometers (37 miles) before plunging into the Sea of Japan.

South Korea's defense department would not release any other details about the missile but the incident is being investigated.

A North Korean official attending the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Malaysia told Reuters Tuesday the missile test had been undertaken for "security" reasons, but would not elaborate.

In Washington, the White House said preliminary reports showed it was a short-range missile.

Some reports suggest the missile was a Chinese-made Silkworm missile, which has a range of around 80 kilometers, but this information has not been confirmed.

In August 1998, North Korea fired a multistage missile that flew over Japan and landed in the Pacific Ocean, proving the Koreans can strike any part of Japan's territory.

Israel Rules Reserves Must Serve in Occupied Territories
Posted by just_dave on Tuesday, December 31 @ 00:04:29 UTC (13750 reads)
Politics JERUSALEM, Dec. 30 — The Israeli Supreme Court ruled today that reserve soldiers do not have a right to refuse to serve in the occupied territories. It held that Israeli society is too polarized and embattled to permit selective assertions of conscience by its fighters.

In a decision that tried to balance Israel's democratic values and its social and security needs, the court called this a "time of division" and warned that "the recognition of selective conscientious objection might loosen the links that hold us together as a people."

The ruling was a setback to a group of combat soldiers and officers who, while saying they will serve elsewhere, refuse to serve in the West Bank or Gaza Strip because, they say, their duties there involve "dominating, expelling, starving and humiliating an entire people."

Wisconsin GOP wants to bring death penalty back.
Posted by just_dave on Thursday, December 12 @ 08:14:01 UTC (15120 reads)
Politics Wisconsin has had a ban on the death penalty for 150 years, which is far longer then most individual countries have had the practice baned. But that could soon change as a new Republican-controlled Legislature wants Wisconsin's Capitol to reconsider an emotional topic next year: the state's 150-year ban on the death penalty.

Recalling the Washington-area sniper shootings and new world disorder since Sept. 11, 2001, state Senate President-elect Alan Lasee (R-De Pere) says he will introduce a bill to establish a death penalty by lethal injection "only for the hard-core cases, where a judge and jury decide that is the proper punishment."

Lasee said he will wait until the state's billion-dollar budget deficit is solved next year to push his bill. But he won't wait long, he said.

"It's important; I will not back away from it," Lasee said. "Thirty-eight states now have it. It begs the question: Why not Wisconsin?"

Trent Lott=Racist?

Politics ic0n0 writes:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Black lawmakers said Tuesday that Senate Republican leader Trent Lott did not go far enough in apologizing for remarks he made praising the 1948 presidential run of then-segregationist Strom Thurmond.

Democrats should not be too quick to drop the matter either, one black House Democrat said.

Separately, the NAACP said Lott, who will be Senate majority leader in the next Congress, should resign from his leadership position. ``Hateful bigotry'' has no place in Congress, said NAACP President Kweisi Mfume, a former House member.

``It sends a chilling message to all people,'' said Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., of the remarks Lott made last Thursday at a birthday party for 100-year-old Thurmond, R-S.C., who is retiring after 48 years in the Senate.

``These are the kinds of words that tear this nation apart,'' said Cummings, who was elected chairman of the 39-member Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday. ``We are going to do something about it.''

Lott said at the party that his state of Mississippi was proud to have voted for Thurmond in 1948, when Thurmond headed the states rights, anti-integration Dixiecrat ticket that captured 39 Southern electoral votes. ``And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either,'' Lott said.

Those Whacky Militants And Their Punishments...

Your average militant may be violent, bloodthirsty and lack the basic morals needed to function in an orderly society, but damn they know how to punish a junkie.

In this article [hindustantimes.com] their punishment techniques for being caught with herion In North-Eastern India, vary between putting addicts into cages in the center of town and rubbing them with itchy herbs, and simply executing them (the "Texas method").

"The penalty for traffickers and drug users are weird. At times they go to extreme lengths. It all depends on the militant group's punishment guidelines."

But I guess just killing people for using drugs will be a little more effective in swaying crime than using metaphors and eggs...
