| Intel picks Dell over HP for free PCs |

It's as easy as Dell for Intel employees.
The chipmaker has ousted HP as its supplier of choice for a free employee PC program that Intel recently reinstated. Intel workers receive $1,000 to go toward a new Dell of their liking. Intel started the free PC program three years ago in conjunction with HP, but put it on hold as the economic downturn hit. With a recovery not exactly in sight, the revamped version of the giveaway comes with a few strings attached.
For starters, the $1,000 coupon is less than in times past. Exactly how much less? Intel will not say. In addition, employees only have a four week window in which to make their purchase. Even with these restrictions, it's a heck of a nice program to provide for 78,000 staff.

Initially, the news was that AMD's Hammer would surely be clawing its way to us at the end of this year. Then came the next announcement: not just yet. Even the chip manufacturer's best contacts around the world sometimes fail to shed any light; then there's that gut feeling that tells the insider that it won't be long now, that there's still potential in the Athlon XP types with the Thoroughbred core. So let's first banish all uncertainty: the Athlon successor will be launched at the start of 2003 at the earliest.
When AMD recently introduced the fast Athlon XP 2600+ with a modified Thoroughbred B core , marketing strategists at Intel immediately began to signal a change of course so that the 3.06 GHz variation on the Pentium 4, originally planned for January 2003, will already be available this year. Interestingly, Intel is confident enough to pit the Pentium 4 against AMD next year, too, where the P4 will run up against the long-anticipated AMD Claw Hammer, which, like the current processors, will be sold under the Athlon label. That's because the new P4 with Prescott core was initially postponed until mid-2003, leaving only Intel able to field high clock speeds.

OTTAWA, (Reuters) - And you thought you had tough math homework?
Consider the work that went into cracking a secret code developed by Toronto-based Certicom Corp., which makes wireless encryption software.
It took the power of 10,000 computers running around the clock for 549 days, coupled with the brain power of a mathematician at Indiana's University of Notre Dame, to complete one of the world's largest single math computations.
Certicom had challenged scientists, mathematicians, cryptographers and hackers to try to break one of the encryption codes the firm uses to protect digital data.
The solution, rewarded with a $10,000 prize and even richer bragging rights, was reached at 12:56 p.m. on Oct. 15, said Notre Dame researcher and teacher Chris Monico.
