I think you are missing the point. There is a big difference between verbally talking about someone behind their back, and posting rumors about them on the internet using their true name. Suppose later on in life one of these people wants to get a job, but their employer does a google search and comes across some of these rumors. Publishing false statements about someone can affect their life far beyond their school. There is a reason why libel and slander are illegal.
